It’s Thai feast time!

More than any other cuisine, Thai restaurants in Sydney usually fall under the ‘hearty, predictable but ever satisfying and not hard to go wrong’ category.  From Berrowra to Blacktown you can usually pick up a red curry or chicken Pad Thai without too much difference in the taste or quality of the dish.  That’s why we love Thai food – it’s the same spicy goodness wherever we go.  For this reason, it’s hard for Thai restaurants to really stand out from the crowd in Sydney.  There really aren’t many breakthrough acts.

That said, I was surprised to find that Thanon Kao San does find small ways to make a mark on its diners.  Ducking out of the heavy Pitt Street people traffic I entered this tuk-tuk-themed restaurant with a hunger and an open mind.  We started with the tom yum soup with prawns before moving on to a generous seafood platter (and by generous I mean two people eating furiously could not finish everything that was on that plate) with five or six fresh prawns, the same number of grilled mussels, fish fillets, calamari and lots of soft shell crab.  The fried things were nice and crispy and the fresh things were ultra-fresh – everything you’re looking for in a seafood platter.

Next was a whole Tilapia fish, which came already fleshed and ready to eat.  The earthy taste of this fish went surprisingly well with the sweet chilli sauce it was cooked in and was enjoyed all round.

For dessert, we got to choose from about 15-20 different slices made fresh daily.  Most things are sago-based but there are some fab egg custards and coconut goodies.  It’s all traditional Thai and very enticing.

I know I should be going on about the seafood, which was great, by the way, but for me the absolute standout dish was the tom yum.  I know tom yum sounds like the least amazing thing on offer here but don’t look past it. Every flavour in the soup, from the kaffir lime leaves to the lemongrass, galangal and chilli peppers, came through and the result was a whole bowl of yumminess.

This place is definitely worth a visit so grab a voucher (or four) and duck out for lunch or head over after work one night!
